Fine A sum of money paid as part of a penalty of conviction for a particular criminal offense. Leading question One that virtually instructs a witness how to answer or puts into his mouth words to be echoed back; one, which suggests to the witness the answer, desired. Ordinarily prohibited on direct examination, although allowed on cross-examination. Summons A notice to the named person that an action has been commenced against him in court and that he is required to appear, on the day named, and answer the complaint. Bailiff A court officer whose duties are to keep order in the courtroom and to have custody of the jury. Indeterminate sentence An indefinite sentence of imprisonment, within a specified range (e.g. "5 to life") with the Board of Pardons later determining the exact term to be served. Tort An injury or wrong committed, either with or without force, to the person or property of another, for which civil liability may be imposed. Information The first paper filed in criminal prosecution, which states the crime of which the defendant is accused. Referral Follows cross-examination, and is conducted by the party who first examined the witness.
